Prime Minister Narendra Modi, today, flagged off India’s first semi-high speed train, scheduled to run between Delhi and Varanasi

Vande Bharat Express, India first self-made fastest engine-less train, was flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Friday, from the New Delhi Railway Station. The inauguration event was attended by the Indian Railway Minister, Piyush Goyal and various other members of the Railway board. The commercial run, on Delhi-Varanasi route via Kanpur and Prayagraj, is scheduled to officially start from February 17, 2019.

Before inauguration, PM Modi personally inspected the Vande Bharat Express, which can run at an optimum speed of 160 kmph. During the inaugural ceremony, the Prime Minister said, “I am grateful to designers and engineers behind Vande Bharat Express which will take its first trip from Delhi to Varanasi today. With our sincerity and hardwork in the last 4.5 years we have tried to improve railways.”

Developed by Chennai based Integral Coach Factory, Train 18 or T18, will cut travel time by 15 per cent compared to the Shatabdi Express, one of the fastest and most popular passenger trains in India.  The high-class 16 coach prototype without a locomotive (engine) comes with advanced technical features for quick acceleration.
