India’s Permanent Envoy to UN, Mr. Akbaruddin thanks 55 Asia-Pacific nations who have supported India’s Non-Permanent Seat at UNSC
Ahead of elections for five significant non-permanent members of United Nations Security Council (UNSC), 55 Asia-Pacific nations have shown massive support to India and have unanimously backed India’s bid to acquire a non-permanent seat at the UNSC for the 2020-2021 session.
The 55 Asia-Pacific nations backing India’s bid at UNSC include countries like Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Syria, Turkey, UAE, and Vietnam.
In an official tweet, India’s Permanent Envoy to UN Mr. Akbaruddin tweeted a video message saying, “Asia-Pacific Group endorses India for Non-Permanent Seat of United Nations Security Council. 55 countries, 1 nominee – India for non-permanent seat of UN Security Council Term 2021-2022.”
The video message sent out thanks to all the countries in the Asia Pacific group for endorsing India’s candidature.
India has been able to secure a non-permanent seat in the UNSC in five terms, the years being 1950-1951, 1967-1968, 1972-1973, 1977-1978, 1984-1985, 1991-1992 and most recently in 2011-2012 under the leadership of former Ambassador Hardeep Singh Puri.
The 10 non-permanent seats in the UNSC are elected and distributed on a regional basis: five for African and Asian States; one for Eastern European States; two for the Latin American and Caribbean States; and two for Western European and other States.
The strong support for India’s election will further bolster India’s chances of securing a non-permanent UNSC seat for the session 2020-2021.
