Pakistan’s former President, Asif Ali Zardari has been arrested under high-profile money laundering charges. Zardari has denied all allegations

Former President of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari was arrested on Monday. The arrest came soon after a court rejected his bail application in a high-profile money laundering case.

Zardari is the husband of Pakistan’s assassinated Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto. She was the first democratic female leader of a Muslim state. Bhutto served as PM for two terms.

Asif Ali Zardari served as the President of Pakistan between 2008 and 2013. He has faced corruption allegations for years.

On Monday, Pakistani police officers arrested Zardari from his residence under charges related to shifty transactionsworth 4.4 billion Pakistani rupees.

The suspicious transactions were allegedly carried out through multiple bank accounts registered under different names.

Reportedly, Zardari is being held under the custody of Pakistan’s National Accountability Bureau (NAB). He will appear in the court on Tuesday.

Zardari’s party, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has announced nationwide protests and an emergency meeting to deal with the situation. The PPP tweeted, “Asif Ali Zardari handed himself into the NAB custody as a mark of protest against the unjust and unfair treatment being meted out to him here on Monday.”
