Sixteen US states sued President Donald Trump’s administration over his decision to declare a national emergency

More than fifteen US states, including New York and California, teamed up to file a lawsuit against US President Donald Trump’s declaration of a national emergency, primarily to fund his ambitious border wall. Reportedly filed in San Francisco federal court, the lawsuit contends the emergency announcement claiming that it was not based on facts and contrary to the America’s constitutional presentment.

The New York Attorney General Tish James, in a statement, said, “Declaring a National Emergency when one does not exist is immoral and illegal.” He further added, “Diverting necessary funds from real emergencies, crime-fighting activities, and military construction projects usurps Congressional power and will hurt Americans across the country.”

US President Donald Trump, last week, declared a national emergency citing an “invasion” of human traffickers and drugs from the southern border. The declaration of national emergency will allow the US President to bypass Congress and direct the required fund to build a border wall. In the same media briefing at the Rose Garden White House, Trump himself anticipated a judicial review in this regard while saying, “I expect to be sued.” He also said, “We will have a national emergency, and we will then be sued. And we will possibly get a bad ruling, and then we’ll get another bad ruling and then we’ll end up in the Supreme Court and hopefully we’ll get a fair shake and we’ll win in the Supreme Court.”

Apart from New York and California, the lawsuit is also signed by the attorneys generals of Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon and Virginia.
