On December 9, the President, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, spoke by telephone to the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, His Excellency Ilham Aliyev. During the call, the two countries’ bilateral relations were reviewed, and prospects for future cooperation to realise their shared development goals were investigated.
The two leaders discussed current areas of cooperation between the United Arab Emirates and Azerbaijan during the call, paying particular attention to important areas, including economic development, renewable energy, and other areas that are essential for both nations’ sustainable development.
The Honourable His Excellency Ilham Aliyev and Sheikh Mohamed also discussed a range of mutually beneficial regional and global concerns. The ongoing COP28 climate change summit at Expo City Dubai was also discussed during the call. President Aliyev stated his expectations that the conference’s conclusions will result in major, doable steps towards global climate action, successfully address the problems posed by climate change, and promote social and economic development that is sustainable on a global scale.
On December 26, 1991, the United Arab Emirates recognised the Republic of Azerbaijan’s independence. On September 1, 1992, the UAE and the Republic of Azerbaijan established diplomatic ties. The UAE’s Ambassador in Ankara was accredited to Azerbaijan in June 1994.
In 2011, Baku hosted the Third Azerbaijan-UAE Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, and Technical Cooperation. Three signed documents were: 1. “Convention between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the United Arab Emirates for the avoidance of double taxation with respect to taxes on income and on capital”; 2. “Agreement on economic, trade, and technical cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the United Arab Emirates”; and 3. “Agreement between the Government of the United Arab Emirates and the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan on the Promotion and Reciprocal Protection of Investments.” The following signed documents pertain to the humanitarian sector: 1. “Agreement between the Government of the United Arab Emirates and the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan on cooperation in the field of education”; 2. “Agreement between the Government of the United Arab Emirates and the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan on cooperation in the field of culture”; 3. “Agreement between the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Ministry of Health of the United Arab Emirates on collaboration in the public health and medical science sectors”.
Inter-parliamentary Ties: In 2011, the United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Azerbaijan formed a working group on inter-parliamentary cooperation. The ten-member working group is under the direction of Amiraslanov Ahliman. Political domain: The following document was signed: “The Memorandum of Understanding on Political Consultation between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Azerbaijan.”
In order to participate in the international exhibition and conference “ITU Telecom World 2012,” which was held in Dubai, the Minister of Communications and Information Technologies of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ali Abbasov, visited the United Arab Emirates in 2012. 2012 saw Natig Aliyev, the Republic of Azerbaijan’s Minister of Industry and Energy, travel to the United Arab Emirates in order to take part in the World Energy Forum.
In 2017, HH Sheikh Abdulla bin Zayed al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the United Arab Emirates, paid an official visit to Azerbaijan.
