India’s President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi on Martyrs’ Day, celebrated on January 30 in the country.
India’s President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi commemorated the 71st death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial in Rajpath, New Delhi today. The Indian Prime Minister tweeted, “….Remembering Bapu on his Punya Tithi. We reiterate our commitment to follow the path shown by him and abide by the values he stood for.” The Father of the Nation was fondly remembered by playing his favourite bhajan at Rajpath, ‘Raghupati Raghava Raja Ram’ on the occasion. Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri paid their tributes during the inter-religion prayer held at Rajpath. Congress President Rahul Gandhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also marked their presence.
Currently on a visit to Gujarat, the Indian PM will inaugurate the National Salt Satyagraha Memorial at Dandi in the city. The memorial includes statues of Bapu and the Satyagrahis, who set out on the Dandi March on March 12, 1930. “On Bapu’s Punya Tithi, I will be in Dandi, the place from where Bapu challenged the might of colonialism. In Dandi, the National Salt Satyagraha Memorial will be dedicated to the nation. This is a tribute to Satyagrahis led by Gandhi Ji, who worked for India’s freedom,” the Prime Minister tweeted.
