Indian actress Urmila Matodkar joined the Congress on Wednesday, after her meeting with Party President Rahul Gandhi.
Addressing a press conference, Matondkar said, “I am taking my first step in active politics. I am from a family that has shaped my political views based on the ideology of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Patel.”
She added, “It is another matter that despite being from an academics-oriented family, I joined films. But I had social awareness right from childhood.” The actress is expected to contest election from Mumbai North, against BJP MP Gopal Shetty.
Matondkar has been involved in several humanitarian efforts over the years. Reportedly, the actress has been working for the betterment of underprivileged women and children.
Newly appointed Chief of Mumbai Congress, Milind Deora also addressed the press conference, held in New Delhi.
He said, “I have known Urmila-ji for years. She is not just one of India’s finest artistes, but someone who is extremely opinionated on issues affecting our society and someone taking the political step for the long run to serve the country through the Congress party.”
Ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, Matondkar asked the media to not think of her as some glamorous film star. She said, “I know when filmstars enter politics, they are expected to pull in voters because of their glamour. I would request you to keep such thoughts away when it comes to me.”
On Monday, the First Indian woman to win a medal in the Paralympic Games, Deepa Malik joined the ruling, Bharatiya Janta Party.
The Indian athlete asserted, “The work that PM Modi has done for women empowerment and his thoughts towards women, is evident. He has put women in leading portfolios, he has also worked extensively for the ‘divyangs’.”
Malik joined the BJP in the presence of Haryana Unit Chief Subhash Barala and Gen Secretary Anil Jain. The athlete is expected to contest elections from the state in upcoming polls. BJP is yet to announce the candidates for Haryana.
