Actor-turned-politician Urmila Matondkar has been fielded for Mumbai North seat against Gopal Shetty from BJP
Congress party candidate Urmila Matondkar filed her nominations for the fourth phase of Lok Sabha polls in Maharashtra on Monday. She was riding a motorcycle to file her poll papers from Mumbai North. The actor would be contesting against BJP’s Gopal Shetty.
Matondkar was accompanied by Mumbai Congress chief Milind Deora and other party nominees. They have also filed their poll papers for the fourth phase of the Lok Sabha polls in Maharashtra.
After filing nomination, she went on a roadside campaign in an SUV, wearing a turban, and greeted crowd from the sunroof with folded hands. “Thank you all members of media and all my supporters for immense support. #AapliMumbaichiMulagi, (sic)”, read one of her tweets along with her picture from the campaign.
The Rangeela actor joined the party on March 27, after meeting Congress Chief Rahul Gandhi. A news agency quoted on her journey as a politician, saying “The journey will be long, and I am sure it will be fruitful. I am very confident and I can feel people’s support.”
With popular Hindi films like “Satya” and “Masoom” in her acting career, Matondkar has been in news for controversies since she joined politics. Earlier, her tweet showing Indian Air Force pilot Abhinandan Varthaman’s photo during a roadshow had put her under fire. The political parties were directed by the Election Commission to not use the pictures of armed forces personnel in poll campaigns.
Suresh Nakhua, a BJP worker, had also filed a complaint last week against Matondkar for making anti-Hindu statement in a TV interview. But the actor dismissed the complaint saying, “The complaint is bogus, baseless and filled with ulterior motives.”
