Veteran Bollywood Actor Rishi Kapoor Passes Away in Mumbai

He was admitted to a private hospital in Mumbai a day before due to health concerns

India actor Rishi Kapoor, who has had a glorious career in the Hindi cinema industry, passed away at the age of 67 on April 30. He was admitted to Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital in Mumbai due to health issues on April 29. Rishi Kapoor was diagnosed with cancer in 2018 following which he lived in New York, the United States for almost a year for the treatments before returning to India in September last year. Post return, he had been hospitalised twice in February due to health concerns. 

In a statement to the media, the Rishi Kapoor’s family said, “Our dear Rishi Kapoor passed away peacefully at 8:45 am IST in hospital today after a two-year battle with leukaemia. The doctors and medical staff at the hospital said he kept them entertained to the last. He was grateful for the love of his fans that poured in from the world over. In his passing, they would all understand that he would like to be remembered with a smile and not with tears.” The family also asked the public to respect the lockdown rules in place to combat the coronavirus pandemic while paying their tributes to the veteran actor. Rishi Kapoor is survived by his wife Neeru Kapoor, son Ranbir Kapoor and daughter Ridhima.  

President Ram Nath Kovind condoled the demise of the actor by tweeting, “Rishi Kapoor’s untimely demise is shocking. An evergreen personality with an always smiling face, he was so full of life that it’s difficult to believe that he is no more. A huge loss for the entertainment industry. Let us pray for his soul. Condolences to his family and friends”. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid his respects by remembering the actor as a “powerhouse of talent”. He tweeted, “Multifaceted, endearing and lively…this was Rishi Kapoor Ji. He was a powerhouse of talent. I will always recall our interactions, even on social media. He was passionate about films and India’s progress. Anguished by his demise. Condolences to his family and fans. Om Shanti.” 

The second son of actor Raj Kapoor and grandson of Prithviraj Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor began his career as a child artist in 1970 hit movie Mera Naam Joker, for which he received a National Award. He was first seen as an adult protagonist in the film Bobby released in 1973. Since then he has acted in over 90 films in the next four decades. He was last seen in 102 Not Out co-starring Amitabh Bacchan.
