Former Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj passes away at 67

Former external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj breathed her last on Tuesday after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj was rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi after she encountered a massive cardiac arrest. Doctors administered CPR, but she did not respond to the treatment.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences and opined, “A glorious chapter in Indian politics comes to an end. India grieves the demise of a remarkable leader who devoted her life to public service & bettering lives of the poor. Sushma Swaraj Ji was one of her kind, who was a source of inspiration for crores of people”.

President Ram Nath Kovind expressed his sadness over her demise and said that the “country has lost a much-loved leader who epitomised dignity, courage & integrity in public life”.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi paid his tributes and said that the BJP stalwart was “an extraordinary political leader, a gifted orator & an exceptional Parliamentarian, with friendships across party lines”.

Messages from world dignitaries also poured in, as they expressed their sadness over her sudden demise.

  • Recounting his “fruitful discussions” with Swaraj, Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif expressed his sadness over her sudden passing.
  • Former Israeli ambassador to India Daniel Carmon recalled Swaraj’s visit to Jerusalem in 2016 and opined that she was “impressively accessible” to the Indian diaspora.
  • Russia Foreign Ministry tweeted, “We express our sincere condolences to the people of #India on the passing away of the former FM of this friendly country @SushmaSwaraj.”
  • Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also extended sympathy to Swaraj’s family and tweeted, “She (Sushma) was a good friend of Bangladesh. With her death, Bangladesh has lost a good friend. Bangladesh will recall her contributions in taking the relationship between the two countries to a new height.”
