On Wednesday, the Prime Minister called on alliance and Opposition leaders to join him for the ‘One Nation, One Election’ meeting.
‘One Nation, One Election’ proposes simultaneous Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections. A Constitutional amendment is needed for implementing the same.
For a Constitutional amendment, the government will require a two-thirds majority in both houses of the Indian Parliament. Hence, support from the Opposition is crucial.
Apart from simultaneous elections, the meeting also discussed NITI Aayog’s proposal for developing “aspirational districts”.
Development of aspirational districts aims at pacing up socio-economic growth in 117 districts across 28 states.
Leaders at the Wednesday Meeting
Prominent Opposition leaders that did not attend the meeting included Rahul Gandhi (Congress), Mamta Banerjee (TMC), and Chandrababu Naidu (TDP).
Mayawati (BSP), Akhilesh Yadav (SP), Arvind Kejriwal (AAP), and Uddhav Thackeray (Shiv Sena) also excused themselves from the meeting.
While TDP and AAP sent representatives, Chief Minister of Telangana, K Chandrashekhar Rao sent his son and TRS leader KT Rama Rao.
Prominent attendees included Sharad Pawar (NCP), D Raja (CPI), Sukhbir Badal (SAD), Naveen Patnaik (BJD), Nitish Kumar (JD-U), Mehbooba Mufti (PDP), Jaggan Reddy (YSRCP), Conrad Sangma (NPP), and Farooq Abdullah (NC).
According to Union Minister Rajnath Singh, the meeting was attended by 21 of the 40 Parliamentary parties.
He further added that most leaders were able to see the point of the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal.
Soon after the meeting, Rajnath Singh told the media, “The PM will form a committee to look into possibilities of simultaneous polls. Exact nature of the committee will be made public later.”
