The Monsoon Session of the Parliament was commenced on Tuesday, June 18 and is scheduled to last till August 10, 2019.
Several elected Members of Parliament (MP), including first-time MPs, who are yet to take oath, will take an administered oath under the newly appointed Speaker, Om Birla.
President Ram Nath Kovind will formally convene the session with dates recommended by the Cabinet Committee of Parliamentary Affairs (CCPA), Chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar confirmed that the session will have nearly 18 sittings. “We seek the support and cooperation of opposition parties. There are many important items on the legislative agenda that the government wants to take up in the Monsoon session,” Kumar said.
“More than six ordinances will be taken up,” he added.
On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and other members took oath in the 17th Lok Sabha before the proceedings commenced.
Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi will also chair a meeting of Congress’ Parliament strategy group to chalk out an approach for the on-going Monsoon Session of Parliament.
The triple talaq bill, the most talked about ordinance bill, is waiting to be passed as a law this session.
It can be amongst the top government priorities as it has been passed by the Lok Sabha and is pending in the Rajya Sabha, Minister Ananth Kumar has stated.
He further said that the National Commission for Medical Education Bill and the transgender bill will also be taken up, this session.
Furthermore, the government will push for constitutional status for the National Commission for OBCs.
The election to choose the Deputy Chairman for Rajya Sabha will be taken up in this session as PJ Kurien’s term is coming to an end this month.
