This year, India is celebrating her 70th Republic Day. The chief guest for the grand celebration held in New Delhi is South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa. Marking the common struggles and achievements of former colonies, India and South Africa, the 2019 Republic Day will be addressed by both the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and the South African guest of honour. The 2019 Republic Day Parade also witnessed participation by the all-women Assam Rifles contingent for the first time in history. While Indian states across the country indulged in Republic Day festivities, the Indian Prime Minister shared glimpses of the celebration in the capital through a tweet that read, “Our vibrant Republic!”
