Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Cyprus on 15th June 2025 in a historic first visit ever by an Indian Prime Minister to the Mediterranean nation. He received a warm and enthusiastic welcome from the Indian diaspora in Limassol as part of the three-nation diplomatic tour, which includes stops in Canada and Croatia. They gathered outside his hotel with bouquets and warm gestures, reflecting the excitement of his visit.
Upon PM Modi’s arrival in Cyprus, he was greeted by a ceremonial welcome by President Nikos Christodoulides and Finance Minister Constantinos Kombos. “Landed in Cyprus. My gratitude to the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, for the special gesture of welcoming me at the airport. This visit will add significant momentum to India-Cyprus relations, especially in areas like trade, investment and more,” PM Modi shared on his official X account.
During his visit, PM Modi held formal delegation-level talks with the President on topics such as cooperation in trade, investment, IT and Innovation, defence, shipping, renewable energy and strengthening people-to-people ties. They also discussed regional and global developments including maritime security. Ahead of Modi’s arrival, President Christodoulides emphasized Cyprus’s role as a gateway between India and Europe. “One of the objectives of our discussions is the connection of India with Europe through the region of the wider Middle East, (and) its entry into Europe through the Republic of Cyprus,” he told journalists.
Cyprus is a member of the EU and is set to assume the rotating presidency of the EU in early 2026. Both, India and Cyprus have enjoyed their diplomatic relations since 1962 and also share a close bond through their membership in the Commonwealth. Cyprus has consistently supported India’s position on key international issues, including Kashmir, at global platforms such as the United Nations. Apart from official meetings, PM Modi interacted with the Indian community in Cyprus, which, though small, plays a significant role in the country’s education, healthcare, and business sectors. President Christodoulides also welcomed PM Modi via a post on X, writing: “Welcome to Cyprus Prime Minister Narendra Modi! Here, at the EU’s southeastern frontier and gateway of the Mediterranean. A historic visit… A new chapter in a strategic partnership that knows no limits. We make a promise to advance, transform, prosper more. Together.”
Before departing for his tour, PM Modi described Cyprus as “a close friend and an important partner in the Mediterranean region and the EU,” underlining the opportunity to strengthen the historical friendship and deepen people-to-people exchanges. Following his visit to Cyprus, PM Modi will travel to Canada to participate in the G7 Summit, before heading to Croatia for meetings with President Zoran Milanovic and Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic.
