External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar visited Mongolia on 22 and 23 June 2026, as part of a four-day official tour that also included the Republic of Korea. Upon arrival in Ulaanbaatar, EAM Dr Jaishankar was received by Mongolia’s State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Munktushig Ilkhanajav.
EAM Jaishankar held comprehensive bilateral discussions with Foreign Minister Battsetseg Batmunkh. During a press statement issued after the meeting, he stated, “So in our discussions today, we really reviewed the entire gamut of our bilateral cooperation, including the development partnership, of which the oil refinery is the most important project. There is also an ICT centre and a school and a number of quick impact projects. We spoke about capacity building, technology, economic and trade cooperation, supply chain cooperation, education, culture, defence, security, and energy.”
Additionally, on X, he reviewed the meeting and concluded the post with, “As a third neighbour and a spiritual partner, India stands ready to advance its close and cordial ties with Mongolia.”
EAM Jaishankar called on Mongolian President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa in Ulaanbaatar, conveying official greetings from President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. On X, the EAM noted: “Honoured to call on President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa of Mongolia… President Ukhnaa’s visit last year imparted strong momentum to our Strategic Partnership. Value his guidance on advancing our strong cooperation in a wide range of sectors. Fully agree with him that the greatest friendship is spiritual friendship.”
Mongolian President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa had visited New Delhi in October 2025 for a four-day state visit, during which the two sides discussed the next decade of cooperation. Following that meeting, India stated that the Mongolian oil refinery, its largest Line of Credit-backed infrastructure project, is expected to be operational by 2028.
EAM Dr Jaishankar also met Speaker of the State Great Khural, Sandag Byambatsogt, welcoming his support for India-Mongolia parliamentary exchanges. The EAM wrote, X: “A pleasure to meet Speaker of the State Great Khural Sandag Byambatsogt today. Welcome his strong support for India–Mongolia parliamentary exchanges and friendship. Reiterated support to deepening our people-centric development partnership.”
Dr Jaishankar visited the Gandan Monastery and met Chief Abbot Khamba Nomun Khan Geshe Lharampa D. Javzandorj. The EAM said, “Glad to meet His Eminence Khamba Nomun Khan Geshe Lharampa D. Javzandorj, Chief Abbot of Gandan Monastery, Mongolia. His blessings for deepening our cultural ties and people-to-people goodwill are deeply cherished.”
Dr Jaishankar also had a warm interaction with Minister of Education L. Enkh-Amgalan and former President N. Enkhbayar of Mongolia.
