The 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) convention commenced on 8th Jan 2025 for two days in Odisha’s capital, Bhubaneswar, with over 3,000 delegates from 70 countries coming together to celebrate the achievements and contributions of the Indian diaspora. The annual event, a hallmark for fostering connections between Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), and their motherland, opened with great enthusiasm and a spirit of collaboration.
The convention kicked off with the inauguration of the Youth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Delegates participated in multiple plenary sessions that delved into the diaspora’s role in India’s development and the opportunities for collaboration across various sectors. The three-day event celebrates not only the cultural and emotional ties that bind NRIs and PIOs to India but also their pivotal contributions to the nation’s economic and social progress.
Delegates Share Their Stories and Aspirations
Delegates from across the globe shared their perspectives and experiences, showcasing the significance of the event in fostering mutual growth and understanding. Vikash Gupta, Director of International Trade at the Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce, highlighted the importance of the event in bridging India and the world. “As a Canadian citizen for 16 years and a businessman, this platform is essential for fostering interactions between Indian businesses and international counterparts at both bureaucratic and business levels,” he remarked.
Jaideep Sharma, a first-time attendee from Melbourne, expressed his pride in being part of the event. “It’s an honour to be recognised and invited by India to come together on one platform. Though I missed yesterday’s session, we are fully committed to the next two days,” he shared. Similarly, Debi Das, a delegate from the UK, spoke about the diaspora’s desire to give back to India. “We want to contribute our knowledge and expertise acquired globally. It’s a proud moment to be part of this celebration,” he said.
Ajay Rane, an Australian delegate recognised for his contributions to women’s empowerment, reflected on the significance of the diaspora’s involvement in social causes. “The recognition from PM Modi to the diaspora is crucial. Our work against female feticide aligns with India’s ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ initiative, which has seen significant progress over 30 years,” he stated. For Dr. Syed N. Masood, a Saudi Arabia-based businessman originally from Hyderabad, this year’s PBD marks his fifth visit. “It’s heartwarming to see India valuing NRIs for their significant financial contributions. The investment opportunities and schemes introduced for us are commendable,” he noted, emphasizing the event’s role in strengthening economic partnerships.
Strengthening Bonds and Celebrating Achievements
The convention highlights the government’s ongoing efforts to deepen engagement with the diaspora. President Droupadi Murmu will deliver the valedictory address on January 10, marking the conclusion of the event. She will also confer the prestigious Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards, honouring outstanding members of the diaspora who have made significant contributions in various fields. This year’s Pravasi Bharatiya Divas has emerged as a platform for celebrating achievements, sharing knowledge, and paving the way for new opportunities. The delegates’ diverse stories underscore their collective pride in India’s progress and their aspirations to contribute further to its future.
Odisha’s Growing Role
The selection of Bhubaneswar as the host city for the 2025 Pravasi Bharatiya Divas has also shone a spotlight on Odisha as an emerging hub of global investment and cultural heritage. The state’s leadership expressed its commitment to leveraging the convention to boost international partnerships, particularly in technology, trade, and tourism. As the event continues, discussions, cultural programs, and networking opportunities are expected to strengthen the bond between India and its global diaspora, creating avenues for deeper collaboration and shared prosperity.
