ASEAN Day 2026, observed on 8 August, marks the 59th anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. This year’s celebrations are especially significant as ASEAN welcomes Timor-Leste as its 11th Member State, commemorates 50 years of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia, and begins implementing the long-term ASEAN Community Vision 2045 vision: Our Shared Future. Under the Philippines’ 2026 Chairship, the celebrations were held under the theme “Navigating Our Future, Together.”
59th ASEAN Day in Jakarta
The programme was held at the ASEAN Secretariat, the organisation’s headquaters in Jakarta, Indonesia. Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, Secretary-General of ASEAN, officiated the event, which brought together ASEAN officials, ambassadors, and representatives of Dialogue, Sectoral and Development Partners, among other participants. Timor-Leste took part for the first time as ASEAN’s 11th Member State, having acceded to ASEAN in October 2025, the first new entrant since Cambodia joined in 1999. This development was specifically highlighted through an “ASEAN 11” video presentation during the event.
The programme included the ASEAN Anthem, a thematic video, and messages from senior regional leaders. Dr. Kao Kim Hourn delivered the welcome remarks, emphasising the importance of continued collective action and regional cooperation. Indonesian Foreign Minister Mr. Sugiono also delivered a special ASEAN Day address, while the President of the Philippines and ASEAN Chair for 2025, Mr. Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., addressed the gathering through a video message. This year’s theme was built around three priority areas: Peace and Security Anchors, Prosperity Corridors and People Empowerment. These priorities provide the broader framework for ASEAN’s activities during the year.
50 Years of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation
The ASEAN Secretariat held a dedicated commemorative ceremony on the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) during the event. A particularly symbolic element was the inauguration of a Display Corner featuring the flags of the High Contracting Parties to the TAC. The display represents the treaty’s continuing role in promoting peace, stability, friendship and cooperation in Southeast Asia and beyond.
Culture, Food, and ASEAN Institutions
The event also placed ASEAN’s diverse cultures and people at the centre of the occasion. Filipino cultural performances were included as part of the programme, reflecting the Philippines’ role as ASEAN Chair in 2026. Participants could also experience the region’s culinary diversity at the ASEAN Day Food Festival. Alongside this, an Exhibition of ASEAN Entities and Centres of Excellence showcased organisations and institutions contributing to ASEAN cooperation in different fields. These elements gave the anniversary a people-centred and cultural dimension beyond its formal diplomatic proceedings.
Looking Ahead to ASEAN 2045
The 59th anniversary comes at the beginning of a new long-term phase for ASEAN. 2026 is the first year of implementation of “ASEAN 2045: Our Shared Future”, the framework that sets the organisation’s direction for the coming decades. With 11 members, five decades of TAC, a new long-term development framework and the Philippines’ call to navigate the future collectively, ASEAN Day 2026 provided an opportunity to highlight both regional continuity and a new chapter for Southeast Asian cooperation. As ASEAN moves towards its 60th anniversary in 2027, the 2026 celebrations brought together diplomacy, culture, economic cooperation, and regional identity under a single message of navigating the region’s future through greater cooperation and collective action.
