A 15-year-old student from Sweden, Greta Thunberg delivered a powerful speech at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Poland. The teenager blasted world leaders and policymakers for not taking immediate and adequate actions to combat climate change
Greta Thunberg is a 15-year-old climate activist from Sweden, who in her speech at the UN Climate Change Conference fired world leaders and policymakers, stating they were not “mature enough to tell it like it is.”
The student activist spoke on behalf of a global climate activist group, Climate Justice Now at the COP24 in Poland. The teenager referred to the “Strike 4 Climate Action” which brought together thousands of school children that refused to attend school unless stricter measures were taken to combat climate change. She said, “if few children could get headlines all over the world just by not going to school then imagine what we could all do together if we really wanted to.”
She further urged leaders to speak clearly about climate change, asserting, “you only speak of green eternal economic growth because you are too scared of being unpopular. You only talk about moving forward with the same bad ideas that got us into this mess even when the only sensible thing to do is pull the emergency brake.” The teenage activist blamed the leaders for not thinking about the future, she said, “you say you love your children above all else and yet you are stealing their future in front of their very eyes.”
The young activist has inspired many around the world with her remarkable dedication to bringing about change in the current climatic conditions and urging policymakers to take actions. Greta Thunberg became popular for striking outside the Swedish Parliament, following Sweden’s hottest summer and for speaking about climate change at TEDxStockholm.
