New York, the biggest city in the United States held the sixth installment of the WorldPride celebrations cum parade 2019. More than 20 thousand people were out on New York streets on 30 June 2019 in a strong display of humane commitment towards the LGBTQIA+ community. 2019 also happens to be the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Movement, which paved way for the recognition of human and political rights for the LGBTQIA+ community in United States.
The WorldPride parade passed by the Stonewall Inn, the site of the 1969 uprising and honoured transgender icons Johnson and Rivera as grand marshals of the parade. Both played a key role in the Stonewall movement where they emerged from the bloody clashes with the police as leaders of the Gay Liberation Movement, and helped found the group Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR), which offered housing to homeless and transgender youth.
The 2019 edition of the WorldPride parade was named ‘Stonewall50’ to commemorate the LGBTQIA+ activists who lost their lives in the riots that followed the protest at Stonewall Inn in 1969.
The WorldPride celebrations saw a plethora of gender activists, celebrities, artists and common citizens don rainbow themed outfits and placards demanding equal rights and liberty for LGBTQIA+ community around the world.
