Qatar decides to push both US and Iran towards mediation for de-escalation as its emir visits Tehran to contain the rising regional conflict. The heightened tensions between the US and Iran has set the Gulf on its edges. The hostility between both the belligerents looms ‘an atmosphere of impending danger’ over the Gulf region.
Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Ahmed Al-Thani met with Iran’s President Rouhani on Sunday. He is the first foreign leader to visit Tehran after the US airstrikes killed Iran’s General Solemani.
With his decisive visit, he has urged Iran to resolve the crisis with dialogues. Doha has been caught in the crossfire between the US-Iran’s confrontation as it has vested interest and close ties with both Washington and Tehran.
Though Iran agreed that dialogue is the only way forward for regional stability in the Middle East, it also sees this as an opportunity to extend and strengthen its influence in the region.
Protests in Iran over the ‘accidental’ plane crash
A sea of protestors took to the streets against the government in its capital city Tehran after its officials admitted to “mistakenly” downing the Ukrainian jet, killing all the passengers on board. The public anger against the administration has demanded the resignation of its leader.
Iran had downed the passenger jet that took its flight from Tehran airport mistaking it for a US warplane, hours after it launched retaliation airstrikes on two Iraqi bases that housed US troops.
