Qatar becomes the 8th Country to Accept India’s UPI

Customers in Qatar will be able make secure and convenient payments to India as the remittance service ‘PosTransfer’ is now in operation, enabled by the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) developed by India. This landmark service has come to fruition after a collaboration between Universal Postal Union’s Interconnection Platform (UPU-IP), Qatar Post, and India’s NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) and India Post. The launch of this service is a milestone in India-Qatar bilateral cooperation, besides highlighting India’s prowess in digital financial services and technologies on the global stage.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) launched UPI in 2016, allowing individuals to transfer funds directly to another’s bank account with a few taps, in a matter of seconds. The technology emphasised interoperability; the launch of PosTransfer a decade later sets a paradigm for the global financial landscape based on that principle of interoperability. Such a framework of digital payments empowers customers and businesses by simplifying banking and ensuring transparency by linking transactions to banking institutions.

The PosTransfer service combines India’s digital payments’ infrastructure with the postal network of Qatar and the UPU-IP. It enables a simplified flow of cross-border inward remittances. The Indian community in Qatar can now safely and conveniently transfer remittances back home to UPI-linked bank accounts from any outlet of Qatar Post. The recipients are required to activate the option of receiving foreign inward remittances on their preferred mobile application for UPI payments. The transfer made through UPI applications is instantly credited to their bank account. The facility can be availed for amounts ranging from QAR 10 to QAR 4000, not exceeding INR 1,00,000 in a single transaction. A service charge of QAR 15 is levied on the transaction.

The service was made operational on 15 August 2026, simultaneously marking India’s Independence Day. The Chargé d’Affaires from the Indian Embassy to Qatar, Mr. Sandeep Kumar, visited a Qatar Post outlet in Doha on the occasion. He lauded this initiative as an important step towards digital connectivity and bilateral cooperation in finance. The step is also being hailed for the innovative approach of utilising global postal networks for digital financial services. India Post is in the process of operationalising the PosTransfer service in other countries, expanding the reach of UPI-powered channels of payment through postal operators.
