Born in New York City in 1922, and son of Romanian Jewish immigrants, Lee began to work at Timely Comics (the company that would morph into Marvel Comics) at the age of 17. His first published story was entitled “Captain America Foils the Traitor’s Reve”, which was his first superhero creation. But it was with The Fantastic Four #1 in 1961 that Lee unleashed Marvel’s rise to global acclaim and popularity. Lee further made his mark by crafting superheroes with distinct character flaws, which is evident when one compares DC Comic’s Superman with the more jaded & narcissistic Iron Man. But it is this special quality which made his superheroes relatable and entertaining to watch/read.

Stan Lee was also the creator of Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Daredevil and Ant Man.
