India Shines at Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026

The XXIII Commonwealth Games mark the fourth occasion on which Scotland has hosted the event, following the 1970 and 1986 editions in Edinburgh and the 2014 Games in Glasgow itself. The Games bring together competitors from 74 Commonwealth nations and territories across eleven sports and 214 Gold medal events.

India has moved to eighth place on the medal table at the XXIII Commonwealth Games, currently under way in Glasgow from 23 July to 2 August 2026, with a tally of four medals – one gold, two silver and one bronze, as competition enters its fifth day.

Mirabai Chanu opens India’s gold account

Weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu delivered India’s first gold of the Games on 26 July, winning the women’s 48kg category with a combined lift of 190kg (85kg snatch, 105kg clean and jerk), setting new Commonwealth Games records across all three lift categories. The result marks her third consecutive Commonwealth Games title, following victories at Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022.

Following her win, President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan and Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed their congratulations. The President’s message credited Chanu with exceptional grit and determination, while the Vice President highlighted her dedication and consistent excellence. The Prime Minister described the win as another significant milestone for Indian weightlifting and called Chanu an inspiration to the country’s sportspersons.

Silver and bronze contributions

India’s weightlifting contingent added two further medals on the same day. Chanambam Rishikanta Singh took silver in the men’s 60kg event with a total lift of 264kg, equalling the Commonwealth Games snatch record of 121kg before lifting 143kg in the clean and jerk. Raja Muthupandi secured silver in the men’s 65kg category with a combined lift of 286kg, finishing behind Malaysia’s Muhamad Aznil Bin Bidin, who set a Games record of 299kg.

India’s campaign had opened on 23 July with a bronze medal from para-powerlifter Jhandu Kumar in the men’s heavyweight category, the country’s first podium finish of these Games.

Alongside the weightlifting results, India’s boxing squad advanced further into the competition. Jadumani Singh reached the men’s 55kg quarter-finals with a win over Pakistan’s Sumama Rehman, while Preeti Pawar progressed to the women’s 54kg quarter-finals after defeating Malawi’s Deborah Mtenje.

India has fielded a 124-member contingent competing across eight able-bodied sports — athletics, artistic gymnastics, bowls, boxing, judo, swimming, track cycling and weightlifting — along with five integrated para disciplines. Boxer Lovlina Borgohain has already been assured of a medal after a bye into the women’s 75kg semi-finals, under a format in which both losing semi-finalists receive bronze. Athletics events beginning on 27 July and further finals is scheduled through 2 August.
