The world is getting greener and India, China are the leading contributors, revealed a recent study based on NASA satellites

India and China are leading contributors to the increasing global greenery, says a study published this Monday, based on NASA satellite data analysed by researchers across the world. The massive tree plantation programmes and agriculture intensive economies are two of the most important factors making India and China the leading contributors in global greenery.

The study, published in the latest edition of Nature Sustainability, also reveals that the world has literally turned greener than it was 20 years ago.

A statement released by Chi Chen, the lead author of the Study and a graduate researcher at Boston University’s Department of Earth and Environment, said, “China and India account for one-third of the greening, but contain only 9% of the planet’s land area covered in vegetation — a surprising finding, considering the general notion of land degradation in populous countries from overexploitation.” Chen further added, “That is a surprising finding, considering the general notion of land degradation in populous countries from over-exploitation.”

India broke its own world record of massive tree plantation drive, in 2017, when 66 million saplings were planted in just 12 hours. On the other hand, China’s contribution to the global greenery largely comes from the country’s various programmes to conserve and expand forests.
