The India-US Defence Technology and Trade Initiative (DTTI) signed in 2012. Its main aim is to identify and promote joint ventures for development.
Unfortunately, the initiative couldn’t yield any major results. India and USA are planning to renew Defence Technology Sharing Pact.
Along with this, both the countries are planning on putting new ideas on the table. It will include a focus on startups. It may also focus on the possibility of exports to identified third nations. The USA is focusing more on Industry partnership.
Similarly, the pact focuses on sharing jet engine technology. The USA follows strict export control regime. Due to this, the agreement failed to get approval.
According to the Sources, the next meeting will ta in the capital on Thursday.
Notably, the undersecretary of Defence for Acquisition and Sustainment Ellen M Lord and Secretary Defence Production Subhash Chandra will be attending the meeting.
Further, it is expected that they may look at new ways to take these ideas forward. It may also include setting up of an industry forum.
Furthermore, countries may cooperate in the field of science and technology.
The industrial security pact between India and the USA has already been finalised. It is yet to link formally.
Ellen M Lord said that India as a major defence partner. Significantly, he also mentioned about bilateral military trade.
He said that it has reached around $18 billion this year. Surprisingly, these figures started from zero in 2008.
He further said that “The United States and India are working together to further military-to-military cooperation”.
He summed up saying that “the United States and India are working bilaterally”. They are also “cooperating with other like-minded partners”. This will advance our shared vision for the Indo-Pacific, he said.
