Intense monsoon rains lashed several states of India, devastating homes and leaving hundreds stranded.
Maharashtra, Gujarat, Kerala, and Karnataka continue to witness heavy rains and flood-like situation. Although the situation in Bihar and Assam has improved, routine operations in several states have been disrupted, bringing life to a standstill. NDRF teams have been deployed for rescue operations in several districts.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reviewed the flood-like situation on Tuesday and asked the authorities to take necessary steps to alleviate the problems of those affected. A total of 1, 32,360 people have been evacuated from Solapur, Sangli, Satara, Kolhapur, and Pune.
CM Fadnavis has also suspended the ‘Maha Jandesh Yatra’ in light of the flood crisis. He further said that he has written to Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa and requested him to increase the discharge of water from Almatti dam to provide some relief to people in Sangli district.
Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa also reviewed the situation in Karnataka and said that basic amenities are being provided at rehabilitation centres. So far, 20, 860 people have been evacuated from the inundated areas. Landslides were also reported in Charmadi Ghat area due to incessant rain.
Meanwhile, all educational institutions in Kerala’s Idukki, Malappuram, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Kannur, Kasargod and Kottayam districts remained closed on Thursday due to incessant rains. A red alert has been issued in Idukki, Malappuram and Kozhikode district. The Met department has also issued landslide warnings. Authorities have advised fishermen to not venture into the sea.
The depression over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep depression, triggering heavy rainfall in some areas. The bridge over Poteru river on Malkangiri-Jeypore road submerged in water due to rain. Officials stated that Malkangiri and Rayagada districts are encountering a flood-like situation. Rescue efforts are underway.
