The Government of India has signed a historic tripartite agreement with the representatives of Bodo Rebels in an attempt to maintain peace and development in the state of Assam.

In a historic move, the central government has appeased the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) by signing the third Bodo accord in New Delhi on Monday. Bodoland is under the autonomous administration of the BTC, comprising the four districts of Assam- Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baska and Udalguri.

The Government of India has signed a tripartite agreement with the Assam state government and the members of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) as well as the All Bodo Student Union (ABSU). The agreement does not meet their demand for a separate state or Union Territory but rather gives them administrative, economic and political powers in exchange for their peaceful cooperation with the state.

The disputed region has been renamed as Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) after the agreement. The Union Home Minister Amit Shah has resolved to restore peace and development to the region. This is the third accord to be signed with the Bodo rebels after their violent upsurge for a separate state in the 1990s. The early two accords were signed in 1993 and 2003.

The Centre has offered economic and infrastructure package and agreed to recognise the Bodo language and the culture of its community. The move comes after the Indian government’s recent agreement to resettle the Bru refugees in Tripura.
