Taliban gunmen ambushed a British security contractors’ compound in Kabul on Wednesday. The incursion took place soon after Afghan President AshrafGhani proposed peace plans for the country.

A contractors’ compound of the British security service company, G4S was attacked by gunmen on Wednesday, in Kabul, Afghanistan. The attack was marked by a sudden bomb explosion right outside the G4S facility, leading to a gun battle between the security force on the location and the attackers. Reportedly, ten people were killed and nineteen injured in the incursion claimed by the Taliban.

The attacks came hours after the Afghan President, Ashraf Ghani laid down the blueprint for establishing peace in the country. Amid talks to end an almost two-decade old war with the Taliban, an attack on such a heavily guarded area has shocked the Afghan government. “It is unfortunate and events like this bolster our resolve for peace”, said the Afghan National Security Advisor, Hamdullah Mohib.

Official Taliban spokesperson, Zabihullah Mujahid has asserted that the attacks were a response to Afghan security forces’ actions in the provinces of Helmand and Kandahar. The British security firm, G4S said they have been in constant contact with the authorities in Afghanistan to resolve the ongoing situation.

The attack can be seen as a major setback post US and Afghanistan’s recent efforts to end war with the Taliban.
