In the ongoing G-20 Summit 2019, host Shinzo Abe, Prime Minister stressed on economic empowerment of women and curbing plastic waste disposed in oceans as key areas of cooperation.
Japanese PM Shinzo Abe, the host for the G-20 Summit 2019 stressed on economic empowerment of women and curbing plastic waste disposed in oceans in his address to the participating nations in the Summit. He aims to make the Osaka summit a landmark meeting for significant progress on environmental issues, including climate change and conserving marine life.
Promotion of economic empowerment of women has been one of Shinzo Abe’s prominent agendas since his election to the post of Prime Minister of Japan in 2012. Since then introduction of economic welfare schemes for women have received a positive response in Japan; he hoped other participating nations can also follow such schemes.
The Japan PM as the chair of the on-going Group of 20 meetings in Osaka, has already secured agreement from participating nation’s environment ministers on marine plastic waste that will endorse reduced plastic waste dump in oceans and conserving marine ecology.
Nearly 200 nations have already signed the Paris climate agreement, which commits signatories towards efforts to cap global warming at below two degrees Celsius.
Mr Abe has sought to make the Osaka summit a significant development towards cooperation regarding “digital economies” by framing rules such as devising fair ways to tax corporations. It also includes strengthening precautions against abuse of technologies.
The issue of economic empowerment has taken centre stage in this year’s G-20 Summit. A special session on the issue was held under the G-20 ambit in Osaka. Ivanka Trump, adviser to US President Donald Trump, said on Saturday that ‘the world economy would get a boost of up to $28 trillion by 2025 if women were on an equal economic footing’.
Apart from registering both the issues, Mr Abe had talked about prioritizing commitment to faster progress in countering climate change in his opening remarks at the G-20 Summit 2019.
