Indian boxer scripted history as she won her sixth gold medal in the 48 kg (flyweight) category at the Women’s World Boxing Championship on 24 November in New Delhi.

35 year old Mary Mom defeated Ukraine’s 22 year old Hanna Okhota in a 5-0 decision in the final round of the boxing flyweight championship. She had won against Ms Okhota, also known as the ‘Hunter’, in Poland earlier this year at the Silesian International Boxing Championship.

Mary has previously won the gold medal in 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 editions of the Championships. She now has 6 gold and one silver medal.  This is historic as now she surpasses Irish legend Katie Taylor as the holder of most medals, and her ranking, from 4th is expected to shoot up. Mary is also now at level with men’s sixth-time world champion Felix Savon in World Championships history.

Mary Kom thanked the crowd whilst in tears by saying that “I want to thank the fans who turned up today to cheer me and the Indian contingent. They have been supporting me for last many years.”

In the 57 kg category, India’s Sonia Chahal will face Ornella Gabriele Wahner of Germany. Sonia Chahal entered the final after beating Jo Son Hwa of North Korea by unanimous 5-0 decision on Friday.
