Kamal Nath announced his resignation as Chief Minister on March 20 while addressing the press conference held in the capital city Bhopal. His resignation came ahead of the Supreme Court- mandated floor test in the state assembly. The floor test was authorized by the apex court to ensure that Congress still had a majority in the assembly post departure of 22 MLAs and ministers. On March 10, 22 ministers resigned from the assembly following the departure of former Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia. Scindia then joined BJP on March 11.
