The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is India’s highest award in the arena of cinema. It is presented every year at the National Film Awards Ceremony organised by the Directorate of Film Festivals, it is an organisation set up by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award is honoured for its “outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema” and is selected by a committee consisting of highly esteemed personalities from the Indian film industry. The award comprises a Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus) medallion, a shawl, and a cash prize of Rs 1,000,000.
The prestigious event was celebrated to show the heritage and grandeur of Indian Cinema. This year, Actor Suriya’s legal drama “Jai Bhim” has bagged two awards at the Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival. Jai Bhim is a Tamil-language, Indian legal drama film directed by T. J. Gnanavel and produced by Jyothika and Suriya under 2D Entertainment.
The film stars Suriya and Lijomol Jose and Manikandan with Rajisha Vijayan, Prakash Raj, Rao Ramesh and others in supporting roles. Jai Bhim was released on the OTT platform, Amazon Prime Video, just before Diwali, on 2 November 2021, as part of a multi-film deal signed by 2D Entertainment. The film was critically acclaimed and received appraisals for its story, performances, direction and social message, and several publications listed the film as “one of the best Tamil and Indian films of 2021.”
The film was received positively by audiences and critics. Sharing the news about the film bagging two awards at the Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival, 2D Entertainment tweeted, “#JaiBhim wins the Best Film & Best Supporting Actor awards at the #DadaSahebPhalkeFilmFestival. Congratulations #Manikandan on winning the Best Supporting actor.”The film, Jai Bhim focuses on a lawyer who helps the tribal community to get justice for their basic rights and civilisation in the state after one of them were killed while in police custody for a wrongful arrest. Actor Manikandan, who played the role of Rasakannu in the movie, received the Best Supporting Actor Award.
