Russia’s Putin proposed changes in the political system, its entire government resigned in protest.

In a surprising development in the Russian governance, its Prime Minister Medvedev announced that their government is stepping down from power. Russian PM submitted the resignation of his entire government to President Putin. Medvedev has reasoned that the decision for mass resignation has been made to accommodate space for President Putin.

The mass resignation comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed constitutional changes and desired to make Russia a “strong presidential republic” in his official address to the Parliament. The outgoing Prime Minister is widely recognised as Putin’s long-time ally and they have in between swapped their positions as PM and President.

In few hours of accepting his government’s resignation, Putin has nominated Mikhail Mishustin as the new Prime Minister whose candidature will be reviewed in the Russian Parliament. Since the State Duma is loyal to President Putin, it seems that the transition of power will be arbitrary in the lower house.

Putin had proposed for major shifts in the reforms to strengthen the Russian Parliament. According to his political critics, his ‘unlikely changes’ would give the Russian leader more space acting as the main-man-behind-all. Amidst Kremlin’s political crisis, Putin with public support remains unchallenged as his presidential term will end in 2024.
