An Indian airline captain has been praised internationally after his actions during a serious cockpit incident aboard a Flydubai flight helped prevent what could have become a major aviation disaster. Captain Smit Machchhar was operating Flydubai flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv when an altercation took place in the cockpit on September 30, 2026. The aircraft was subsequently diverted and landed safely at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia.
According to the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the flight was diverted to Tabuk following an incident in the flight deck. Flydubai crew members travelling on board the aircraft intervened and helped secure the aircraft. The UAE authorities have opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the Public Prosecution had formed a specialised team to examine what happened, including the circumstances and possible motives behind the incident.
The ministry has also specifically urged the public to rely on official information and avoid speculation or unverified accounts while the investigation remains underway.
Captain Smit Machchhar at the centre of the emergency
Captain Machchhar, an Indian national, was the captain of the flight. During the incident, he was seriously injured but continued to act in a manner that helped prevent the situation from developing into an even greater emergency. Accounts of the incident reported by officials and international news organisations indicate that the captain was attacked by his co-pilot inside the cockpit. Despite being injured, Machchhar was able to open the cockpit door, allowing other crew members and passengers to intervene.
The intervention was critical because control of the aircraft and the situation inside the flight deck had become a serious safety concern. The aircraft ultimately landed safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. There were 174 people on board the flight, according to reports following the incident. No mass casualty event occurred, and the aircraft reached the Saudi airport safely after being diverted from its original route.
Captain Machchhar was taken to a hospital in Tabuk for medical treatment. Indian authorities have been monitoring his condition and maintaining contact with those involved. The circumstances surrounding the attack, including the motive of the co-pilot and whether there was any prior planning, remain matters for the investigation.
India’s Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, publicly praised Captain Machchhar following the incident. Prime Minister Modi described Captain Machchhar as a hero and highlighted the fact that he continued to protect the lives of others despite being seriously injured. In his official statement, the Prime Minister said that the captain had demonstrated immense courage and an unwavering determination to protect others in the face of grave danger. The Indian Government’s response has also included diplomatic efforts to monitor the captain’s medical condition and support his family.
The incident also drew a public response from Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. Prime Minister Netanyahu praised Captain Machchhar for his actions during the emergency and described him as a true hero. The Israeli response is significant because the aircraft was travelling to Tel Aviv when the incident occurred. The safe diversion to Saudi Arabia prevented the situation from continuing toward its original destination while the emergency was being dealt with. The focus of the public tributes from the Israeli and Indian leadership has been on Captain Machchhar’s conduct during the emergency and his efforts to protect the people aboard the aircraft.
US President Donald Trump has also praised Indian Captain Smit Kakkar for showing courage to save the aircraft from a potential crash.
While the captain has received widespread praise, authorities have been careful not to draw conclusions about the motive behind the incident before the investigation is completed. The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the UAE judicial authorities have jurisdiction because the aircraft is registered in the United Arab Emirates and operates under its flag. The ministry said UAE law therefore applies to crimes committed aboard the aircraft, including when such incidents occur outside UAE territory.
The investigation is examining the circumstances and causes of the incident. Authorities are also considering possible motives and whether the incident involved prior planning or direction. The UAE Government has emphasised that the investigation must be allowed to establish the facts. This is particularly important because official authorities have not independently established a number of details circulating publicly. For now, the central fact established by the official record is that Flydubai flight FZ1073 was diverted from its planned route and landed safely at Tabuk following an incident in the cockpit.
