8th India–Indonesia Joint Commission Meeting

Indonesian Foreign Minister H.E. Mr. Sugiono arrived in New Delhi on 6 June 2026 for a three-day official visit, leading a high-level delegation that included senior officials from Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The visit was scheduled to co-chair the 8th India–Indonesia Joint Commission Meeting (JCM) with External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar. The JCM took place on 7 June 2026 in New Delhi.

In his opening remarks, EAM Jaishankar noted the significance of the occasion: “Excellency, it is a great pleasure to welcome you and your delegation to New Delhi for the 8th India–Indonesia Joint Commission Meeting. Our Joint Commission is happening after 4 years, and I think it’s important to recognise that in those four years, actually we have made good progress in our bilateral relationship. We celebrated 75 years of the establishment of our bilateral ties in 2025.”

EAM Jaishankar outlined the agenda: “Today, I look forward to extensive discussions with you covering the full spectrum of our bilateral cooperation, from political, to defence and security, maritime, trade and investments, health and pharmaceuticals, food security, as well as tourism, education and cultural cooperation.”

The two ministers reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral relations under the India–Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. They discussed avenues for further strengthening cooperation in political, defence and security, maritime, trade and investment, pharma and healthcare, digital, energy, connectivity, space, education, consular and culture domains, and people-to-people exchanges. The ministers noted that discussions between President H.E. Mr. Prabowo Subianto and Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, including during the former’s state visit to India in January 2025, had provided renewed impetus to the bilateral relationship.

The two sides also exchanged views on regional and global developments of mutual interest and reaffirmed their commitment to closer cooperation and coordination in regional and multilateral fora. It was also noted that Indonesia is a key pillar of India’s Act East Policy and that the India–Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, rooted in deep civilisational linkages, continues to grow from strength to strength across established and new areas of cooperation.

FM Sugiono stated during the visit that he looked forward to Prime Minister Modi’s upcoming visit to Jakarta, describing it as an important opportunity to further deepen cooperation and deliver tangible benefits for the peoples of both countries.

The two ministers had previously met in May 2026 on the sidelines of the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New York. The 7th JCM was held in June 2022 in New Delhi and was co-chaired by EAM S. Jaishankar and then Foreign Minister of Indonesia Retno Marsudi. The 8th edition of the meeting, held after a gap of four years, marks the resumption of this flagship bilateral dialogue mechanism.
