Narendra Modi Becomes India’s Longest-Serving Prime Minister

Prime Minister Narendra Modi became India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister on 10 June 2026, completing 4,399 consecutive days in office. This achievement surpasses the previous record of 4,398 continuous days held by Jawaharlal Nehru, who served as an elected prime minister from 1952 to 1964. Modi first took the oath of office on 26 May 2014 and is currently serving his third consecutive term.

Modi is the first non-Congress prime minister to complete two consecutive full-majority terms and the first prime minister since Nehru to secure victory in three successive Lok Sabha elections as the incumbent leader. The 10 June milestone specifically refers to his tenure as an elected prime minister, a category that commences from the date of the first post-election oath following a general election. Nehru continues to hold the record for the longest overall tenure as prime minister, having served from 15 August 1947 until his death on 27 May 1964.

Earlier records also stand. In March 2026, Modi became the longest-serving head of an elected government in India overall, surpassing former Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling, who held office for 8,930 days. Modi completed 8,931 days in public leadership, combining his tenures as chief minister of Gujarat and as prime minister.

Cabinet Resolution

The Union Cabinet passed a resolution on 10 June 2026, marking the date as a historic milestone in the journey of Indian democracy. The resolution described the occasion as a symbol of India’s democratic consciousness, public trust, and the power of public participation. It also noted that it is after six decades that the country has given a mandate to the NDA government for a third consecutive term.

Cabinet members gave the Prime Minister a standing ovation at the meeting. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) shared a video of the occasion on its official channels.
