In the Vidhan Sabha elections, the members of a State Legislative Assembly are elected directly through voting. This year, State Legislative Assembly Elections were conducted in five Indian states- Uttar Pradesh, Manipur, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Goa, the results of which were declared on the 10th of March, 2022.
In Uttar Pradesh, the elections were conducted from 10 February to 7 March 2022 in seven phases to elect all 403 members of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly. BJP in a landslide victory swept over 255 seats out of the total 403 seats in Uttar Pradesh, with Mr Yogi Adityanath returning as the Chief Minister of the state. BJP’s consecutive win in Uttar Pradesh is a historic achievement as no party has won two elections in a row in the last nearly 40 years.
Legislative Assembly elections, in Manipur, were conducted from 28 February to 5 March 2022 in two phases, to elect 60 members of the Manipur Legislative Assembly. Bharatiya Janta Party won 32 out of the total 60 seats in Manipur. Chief Minister N Biren Singh successfully defeated his nearest Congress competitor, P Saratchandra Singh, by 18,271 votes in the Heingang seat. The National People’s Party won 3 seats and led in 6, while the Naga People’s Front won 4 seats.
The Legislative Assembly elections were held in Punjab on 20 February 2022 to elect the 117 members of the 16th Assembly of the Punjab Legislative Assembly. The Aam Aadmi Party has emerged triumphant in the Punjab Assembly Elections 2022, with a sweeping victory on 92 out of the 117 assembly seats. Bhagwant Mann from the Aam Aadmi Party will take oath as Punjab’s Chief Minister on March 16.
Legislative Assembly elections were conducted in Goa on 14 February 2022 to elect 40 members of the Goa Legislative Assembly. The Bharatiya Janata Party has come out as the single largest party with 20 seats in the assembly. Goa’s Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant won his Sanquelim Assembly seat back with a margin of 600 votes, defeating his counterpart Dharmesh Saglani from Congress.
In Uttarakhand, the elections were conducted on 14 February 2022 to elect 70 members of the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly. The Bharatiya Janta Party, yet again with a sweeping victory won over 47 seats out of the total 70 in Uttarakhand.
