US President Donald Trump unveiled his much-anticipated peace plans for Israel-Palestine issues at the White House on Tuesday.
President Trump was joined by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the unveiling of the proposed plans in Washington.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has strongly opposed President Trump’s proposal for a “two-state solution” calling it a “conspiracy” that leans towards Israel’s interests. The Palestinians staged protests and raised an outcry of protests in Gaza, hours before the big announcement from Washington.
As per the new peace plans, President Trump has proposed for an independent Palestinian state with Abu Dis in East Jerusalem as its capital. It will also recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s undisputed official capital. Furthermore, Israel will retain sovereignty over the West Bank settlements and annex the occupied Jordan valley to Jordan’s administration.
President Trump’s vision for peace and development has been criticised and rejected by Palestine for its pro-Israel approach. Palestine has not welcomed Trump administration’s reforms and proposals concerning Israel and Palestine after Washington moved its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in 2018.
Prime Minister Netanyahu will be visiting Moscow to discuss the new proposals with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Saudi Arabia has applauded President Trump’s efforts to propose a peace plan between Israel and Palestine and vowed its support for Palestinian interests.
