The Sharjah International Book Fair: Featuring Booker Prize and Ipaf Winners

The winner of the Booker’s Prize, Geetanjali Shree, Mohammed Alnaas, the Ipaf winner, the author of Quantum Healing, Deepak Chopra; and Lincoln Peirce, the BigNate Cartoonist, are among the leading names who are set to participate in the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF), 2022. The 41st annual event will run from the 2nd to the 13th of November at the Expo Centre Sharjah. The International Book Fair at Sharjah is themed ‘Spread the Word’, according to the Sharjah Book Authority, which was revealed at the Sharjah Research Technology and Innovation Park recently.

The fair will feature more than 120 cultural figures, including Moroccan poet and former minister of culture and communication Mohammed Al-Ash’ari, Ahmed Mourad, Egyptian author, as well as Emirati writers, including Khulood Al Mualla, Sultan Al Amimi, Asma Al Hammadi, and Ibrahim Al Hashemi.

More than 2000 publishers from 95 countries are set to participate in the international book fair. Cuba, Costa Rica, the Philippines, Liberia, Malta, Ireland, Jamaica, Mali, Mali, Hungary, and Iceland are among the few newcomers to the fair. The UAE tops the list of Arab publishers, with the participation of 339 publishing houses, followed by Egypt with 306 participants, and Lebanon and Syria, represented by 125 and 95 publishers, respectively. On the international level, there will be 112 publishers from India, while the UK will be represented

Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, chairman of the Sharjah Book Authority, revealed that the Sharjah International Book Fair is a manifestation of the cultural project of Sharjah and brings together thousands of publishers and hundreds of writers and creators, along with millions of books in different languages, under one big roof. He also recalled how the book fair started with just a few hundred publishers and visitors. Today, the Sharjah International Book Fair is hosting the largest number of publishers in its history as it welcomes 2,213 publishers. Last year, the SIBF was recognized as the largest in the world regarding buying and selling international property rights.

The guest of honour of this year’s book fair will be Italy, with a vibrant agenda that offers visitors insight into the cultural expertise and impact of the European nation. Various activities have been incorporated into the programming as part of the celebration, including children’s activities, a cookery corner, as well as stage performances of Aterballetto: A Poetry Abstraction and Balletto Di Roma.

The publishers’ conference will be organized as part of the fair from October 30 to November 1. The event will try to address the issues and challenges faced by the publishing sector and the future of digital publishing in the Arab world and spotlight emerging markets to promote audiobooks.
