India and Russia convened the 12th Joint Working Group (JWG) meeting on Counter-Terrorism and bilateral conversations on UN and other matters, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening cooperation on multilateral platforms. According to a statement made by the Ministry of External Affairs, Secretary (West) Sanjay Verma traveled to Moscow on May 3–4 for the Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism and bilateral engagements between India and Russia on UN and multilateral issues.
Secretary (West) and H.E Oleg Syromolotov, who is the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, co-chaired the JWG meeting on May 3rd and 4th.
According to the official announcement, both sides discussed current terrorist concerns at the global and regional levels, as well as their experiences combating terrorism and extremism. The Russian side praised the passage of the New Delhi Declaration, which focused on preventing the use of new and developing technology for terrorist purposes and expressed gratitude for India’s role as Chair of the UN Security Council’s Counter-Terrorism Committee in 2022.
According to the MEA announcement, the India-Russia bilateral consultations on UN-related issues took place on May 4 with Sergey Vershinin, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. Both sides engaged in extensive conversations on a variety of UNSC issues, including reform. According to the External Affairs Ministry, Russia underlined its support for India as a permanent member of a reconstituted United Nations Security Council.
In 2019, the Indian delegation attended the 11th meeting of the joint counter-terrorism working group. Vijay Thakur Singh, secretary (East) in the External Affairs Ministry, led the fight against terrorism, while deputy foreign minister Oleg V. Syromolotov led the Russian side. On July 23, 2018, the India-Russia Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism convened its tenth meeting in Moscow.
