A Member of Parliament in Sri Lanka stated in his motion to ban burqa for the national security reason. He also said that it is not a traditional Muslim attire.
Sri Lanka is planning to ban burqa after massive serial blasts that claimed hundreds of lives in the country. The government is in consultations with the mosque authorities, a report said.
Sources from the defense said that numerous female accomplices of the blast in Dematagoda had fled wearing burqas. Reports also claim that terror attacks wearing niqab or burqa have seen a significant rise in number.
Several ministers on Monday spoke to President Maithripala Sirisena on the matter, reported the Daily Mirror. “Our Muslim leaders have also accepted that burka is not a traditional Muslim attire. Some places even have notices to remove the burka before entering,” said Ashu Marasinghe, a Sri Lankan Parliament member, in his motion. “Accordingly, considering the national security I propose to ban the burka,” he added.
However, there have not been any reports to claim that any male bombers wore burqas. If the country imposes ban on burqa, it would join the nations that have done so for security reasons. The countries in Asia, Africa, and Europe have banned the attire to prevent terrorists from hiding and escaping easily.
