Singapore’s PM Visit to India

Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong embarked on his first official visit to India from September 2nd – 4th, 2025, marking a renewed phase in the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and Singapore. He was accompanied by a high-level delegation including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Trade and Industry Mr. Gan Kim Yong, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan, and other senior officials from business and academic sectors. During his visit, PM Wong engaged in substantive bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other Indian leaders, centering on a comprehensive agenda spanning across eight priority areas: economic cooperation, digitalisation, skills and education, sustainability, healthcare, connectivity, defence and security, and cultural exchange.

Both countries uncovered major developments, including Singapore’s decision to scale up its investment in India to USD 20 billion, agreements on space cooperation between India’s IN-SPACe and Singapore’s OSTIn , collaboration on central bank digital currencies between the Monetary Authority of Singapore and the Reserve Bank of India, and initiatives on green and digital shipping corridors. The two leaders also talked over the possibility of exporting green energy from India to Singapore through an undersea power and data cable, while Singapore-based CalpitalLand announced a USD 470 million data centre in Maharashtra.

PM Modi and Lawrence Wong jointly inaugurated Phase-2 development of the Bharat Mumbai Container Terminal (BMCT), which is developed in partnership with Singapore, at Navi Mumbai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Port. The project worth USD 1.7 billion, will handle nearly half of the port’s capacity.

The visit built on the momentum which was generated during Prime Minister Modi’s 2024 Singapore visit, when four MoUs on semiconductors, healthcare, skills, and digital technologies were signed, and the recent India–Singapore Ministerial Roundtable and Joint Working Group on Trade and Investment. Beyond economic cooperation, the leaders also held major discussions on regional security concerns and reaffirmed their cooperation in counterterrorism, maritime security, and regional stability.

Lawrence Wong’s visit to India is remarkable for both the nations since it coincided with the ongoing celebrations of 60 years of diplomatic ties between India and Singapore, underscoring the cultural and people-to-people dimension of the partnership. Taken together, the outcomes of the visit asserted the strategic, economic, and cultural convergence between the two nations, while paving the way for deeper cooperation in rising sectors such as green energy, digital finance, and advanced technologies.
