New Delhi: Fourteen fighters, including Iranians, were killed in an attack on a Syrian government airbase; Reported state based News Agency SANA.

“At least 14 fighters were killed in the strike on the T-4 airport, among them Iranian forces,” said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The Syrian army and its Russia allies said Israeli airpower was responsible for the attack on Tayfur airbase. The US and France warned of a strong response to “horrific chemical weapons attacks” on a rebel-held area near Damascus.

Washington denied any involvement in the attack on Tayfur base, which happened hours before an emergency United Nations meeting on Monday over the reported use of toxic gas — allegedly by the Syrian regime — on the town of Douma in Eastern Ghouta.

The Russian military said on Monday that two Israeli F-15 war planes carried out airstrikes on a Syrian air base near Homs on Sunday.

Interfax, news agency cited the Russian Defense Ministry as saying the Israeli war planes had carried out the strikes from Lebanese air space. The Russian ministry said that Syrian air defense systems had shot down five of eight missiles fired, while the other three landed in the western part of the base.

US President Donald Trump and his European ally, French President Emmanuel Macron, spoke by phone and promised a “strong, joint response” to the chemical attack that killed dozens; the White House said on Sunday. It said that the government of Syrian President Bashar Al Assad “must be held accountable for its continued human rights abuses”.

donald trumpPresident Donald Trump had earlier taken to twitter to issue a warning to Syrian and its allies.

Rami Abdurrahman, the Observatory’s chief, said most of those killed were either Iranians or members of Iran-backed groups. The Observatory says it wasn’t immediately clear who was behind the attack.
