Japan PM, Britain’s New Leader Agree to Deepen Bilateral Relations

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and newly elected British Prime Minister Keir Starmer have committed to strengthening bilateral relations between their countries. This development was confirmed during their first phone call on Saturday, following the Labour Party’s sweeping victory in the recent general election.

In the conversation, Kishida emphasized Japan’s willingness to cooperate with Britain to uphold and enhance a free and open international order grounded in the rule of law, particularly amid the increasingly complex global security landscape. According to Japan’s Foreign Ministry, both leaders expressed their determination to collaborate on various global issues, including the situation in Ukraine, the Middle East, and Asia. A key point of discussion was the continuation of the joint project between Japan, Britain, and Italy to develop a next-generation fighter jet, reflecting a shared commitment to advanced defence cooperation. This trilateral effort signifies a significant step in military technology collaboration, aiming to bolster the defence capabilities of all involved nations.

Kishida also conveyed his heartfelt appreciation for the “heartwarming welcome” extended to Japan’s Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako during their visit to Britain in June. Originally scheduled for 2020, the visit was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The successful visit underscored the strong cultural and diplomatic ties between the two nations. The landslide victory of the Labour Party in Thursday’s election led to Starmer’s ascent as British Prime Minister, succeeding Rishi Sunak and bringing an end to 14 years of Conservative Party governance. This political shift opens new avenues for Japan-UK relations under Starmer’s leadership.

Reflecting on the current state of Japan-UK relations, Kishida remarked that the partnership between the two countries “has never been closer and more robust.” This sentiment highlights the enduring and evolving nature of their bilateral relationship, characterized by mutual respect and cooperation across various sectors, including trade, security, and cultural exchange.

Historically, Japan and the UK have maintained strong diplomatic and economic ties, with both nations being key players on the global stage. Their collaboration extends beyond defence to include significant trade agreements, technological innovation partnerships, and joint efforts in addressing global challenges such as climate change. As both leaders move forward, the commitment to deepening bilateral relations signals a promising future for Japan and the UK, fostering stability and prosperity in the international community.
