The historical ties between Iran and Vietnam date back centuries, with the first Iranian merchants setting foot in Vietnam during the 15th century. A significant milestone in the bilateral relationship occurred in 2023, as both countries celebrated the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties. This occasion not only underscored the longevity of their association but also served as a testament to the enduring friendship between Iran and Vietnam.
Highlighting the recent surge in high-profile visits between the two nations, Nazari pointed to the visits of Vuong Dinh Hue, Chairman of the National Assembly, and H.E. General To Lam, Minister of Public Security, in 2023. These visits, accompanied by a flurry of agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), laid the groundwork for enhanced cooperation across various sectors, with a particular emphasis on trade and economic collaboration. Despite global economic challenges, bilateral trade between Iran and Vietnam saw a notable uptick in 2023, increasing by 66 percent compared to the previous year. This upward trajectory in trade is expected to continue in 2024, fueled by the untapped potential of both economies.
Beyond economic ties, Nazari highlighted Iran’s rich cultural heritage and tourist attractions as potential areas for collaboration. With its ancient civilization, diverse traditions, and recognized World Heritage sites, Iran offers a wealth of opportunities for tourism. The recent decision by the Iranian government to waive tourist visas for Vietnamese passport holders further paves the way for enhanced people-to-people exchanges and tourism cooperation between the two nations.
