In a symbolic gesture, President Putin awarded Modi the ‘Order of St. Andrew the Apostle’, Russia’s highest civilian honour. Prime Minister Narendra Modi the arrived in Austria on Tuesday, after concluding a landmark visit to Russia. This historic trip marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Austria in more than four decades, with Indira Gandhi being the last to visit in 1983.
During his stay in Vienna, PM Modi met with the Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen and hold talks with Chancellor Karl Nehammer. Both leaders also addressed business leaders from India and Austria, discussing ways to further deepen bilateral relations and cooperation on various geopolitical challenges. Ahead of his visit, PM Modi emphasized the shared values of democracy, freedom, and the rule of law that form the foundation of the partnership between India and Austria. “I look forward to my discussions to take our partnership to even greater heights in new and emerging areas of innovation, technology, and sustainable development among others. Together with the Austrian Chancellor, I look forward to exchanging views with business leaders from both sides to explore mutually beneficial trade and investment opportunities. I will also be interacting with the Indian community in Austria, which is very dear to me,” he stated.
This visit follows the 2021 meeting between PM Modi and then-Austrian Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg, who is now the Foreign Minister, on the sidelines of COP26 in Glasgow. Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra highlighted Austria’s importance as a central European country offering excellent opportunities for bilateral cooperation in various sectors, including infrastructure, renewable energy, high technology, startups, media, and entertainment. The Indian diaspora in Austria has expressed their pride and happiness at the Prime Minister’s visit, viewing it as a significant milestone in India-Austria relations.
Upon his arrival, Modi was warmly received by Chancellor Karl Nehammer. The two leaders jointly addressed business leaders from both countries on Wednesday, 10th July, aiming to explore mutually beneficial trade and investment opportunities.
