9th G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit (P20) and Parliamentary Forum Held in New Delhi

The Ninth P20 Summit was hosted by the Parliament of India in collaboration with the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) on 13-14 October 2023 in New Delhi. “Parliaments for One Earth, One Family, One Future” was the summit’s theme, which draws inspiration from the ancient Indian philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (The World is one Family).

The Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, inaugurated the 9th G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit (P20) on October 13 2023, at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi. The Parliament of India hosted the summit under the broader framework of India’s G20 Presidency. Speakers of Parliaments of G20 members and invitee countries attended the event.

A Parliamentary Forum preceded the summit. Parliamentarians from around the world came together in New Delhi on October 12, 2023, to deliberate on various approaches for advancing sustainable lifestyles and tackling climate change at the Parliamentary Forum on LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment).  The Parliamentary Forum on LiFE enfolds considerable significance, serving as a platform for parliamentarians to exchange successful approaches and insights in promoting sustainable living.

During the P20 Summit, the thematic sessions centred their attention on the following four subjects.

Accelerating SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals): To address the global challenges, which will focus on strategies and cooperation to accelerate the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) delineated by the United Nations.

Transformation in People’s Lives through Public Digital Platforms: Examining how digital platforms have transformed public services, government, and social inclusion, focusing on using technology to improve people’s lives.

Women-led development: In recognition of women’s crucial role in development, this session seeks to empower women, advance gender equality, and provide opportunities for active involvement in forming sustainable economies.

Sustainable Energy Transition: Investigating future energy paths, talking about renewable energy sources, and promoting global collaboration in the switch to cleaner, greener energy options.

The Speakers of the Parliaments of the G20 members of the 9th G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit (P20) released a joint statement. According to the joint statement, they recognised the importance of the G20 as the principal international forum for economic cooperation and for providing effective policy responses to existing and upcoming global issues to support sustainable and equitable development worldwide. Additionally, they stressed the significance of the G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit (P20) as a multilateral forum for parliamentary diplomacy and the role of parliament in the G20 process.

They emphasise the significance of completing the 2030 Agenda and recognise the crucial role played by parliaments in guaranteeing accountability for accomplishing their commitments and goals. The leaders recognised the importance of international development cooperation that was guided by the concepts of equitable partnerships, national ownership, initiatives suited to local, regional, and national conditions and circumstances, and consideration of best practices and recommendations.

They promote the development of opportunities and the improvement of skills everywhere. The leaders are convinced of the value of creating cooperative frameworks for legal migration, mobility partnerships, and labour mobility while preventing human trafficking. Both the nations of origin and the countries of destination gain from well-integrated workers and appropriately skilled workers.
