As Vietnam commemorates the 80th anniversary of its independence, the Ambassador of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to Qatar, H E Nguyen Huy Hiep, reflected on the steady growth of bilateral relations between the two nations. Speaking at a press briefing on 21st August, Ambassador Hiep underlined the importance of cultural diplomacy, economic cooperation, and forthcoming high-level exchanges as foundations of a partnership “built on mutual trust and shared ambitions.”
“On the occasion of Vietnam’s 80th Independence Day, the Embassy has placed particular emphasis on fostering cultural understanding and strengthening bonds of friendship,” the Ambassador said. The Embassy has organised a series of cultural events in Doha designed to bridge communities and highlight Vietnam’s heritage. Vietnam’s Independence Day is observed annually on 2 September, marking the country’s historic declaration of independence in 1945.
Expanding Relations
Diplomatic ties between Vietnam and Qatar were established in 1993. Over three decades later, the relationship has matured into a diverse partnership. Trade between the two countries reached $860m in 2024, reflecting an increase of $100m compared with the previous year. “Vietnam–Qatar relations have grown steadily, characterised by mutual trust and effective cooperation,” Ambassador Hiep said. He highlighted Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s official visit to Doha in October 2024 as a turning point that gave “fresh momentum” to the partnership.
Key areas of cooperation identified include logistics, investment, tourism, science, technology, innovation, food security, IT, and cybersecurity. These align with Qatar’s National Vision for sustainable development and Vietnam’s transition towards a green and digital economy. Looking ahead to 2025, Ambassador Hiep expressed optimism about further expanding trade and investment. “Vietnam can provide high-quality agricultural products and technologies to support Qatar’s food security. At the same time, we see strong potential in IT, software, cybersecurity, and renewable energy, particularly solar and wind power,” he said. The Ambassador also cited opportunities in logistics, aviation partnerships with Qatar Airways, and tourism development.
Cultural Diplomacy
A highlight of this year’s independence celebrations is the “Vietnam’s Soul” art exhibition, which will be held at Katara Cultural Village from 9 to 20 September. The exhibition will showcase paintings by Vietnamese artists across a range of styles, from Impressionism to contemporary, offering “a vivid journey into Vietnam’s culture, people, and landscapes.” In addition, a national day reception will bring together Qatari officials, diplomats, media representatives, and members of the Vietnamese community to promote closer cultural and social ties.
The Vietnamese community in Qatar, numbering around 600, mainly work in construction and energy. Ambassador Hiep emphasised the Embassy’s ongoing role in supporting its nationals. “The Embassy attaches great importance to supporting our citizens, not only during national celebrations but throughout their daily lives,” he noted. Earlier this month, the Ambassador visited workers at Frijns Steel Constructions Middle East, where he acknowledged their contributions and shared Vietnam’s historical achievements. The Embassy continues to provide consular support and encourage integration within Qatari society, viewing the community as a “bridge of friendship.”
Future Outlook
Cultural initiatives are set to continue. In 2026, a film screening in partnership with Katara will present the legacy of President Ho Chi Minh, focusing on his message of peace and solidarity. “Such initiatives deepen cultural exchange and create opportunities for our peoples to connect,” Ambassador Hiep said. High-level visits are also anticipated. Vietnam looks forward to welcoming H.H the Amir of Qatar in the near future, with expectations of new agreements covering trade, investment, and technology. Vietnam will also host Qatar at the UN Cybercrime Convention signing in Hanoi in October 2025, while Vietnam will participate in Qatar’s Second World Summit on Social Development the following month.
“These exchanges will help translate strategic trust into practical outcomes: more open markets, larger investment pipelines, and stronger people-to-people connections,” Ambassador Hiep observed. Expressing confidence in the partnership, he concluded: “With these joint efforts, we are certain that Vietnam–Qatar relations will continue to advance to new heights in 2025 and beyond, for the benefit of both countries and their peoples.”
