Oman and Spain are entering a new era of cooperation, reinforcing more than five decades of diplomatic relations with a renewed focus on tourism. The two nations are working together to boost visitor flows, cultural exchange, and economic collaboration, paving the way for a brighter future in the travel sector.
A Historic Friendship Entering a New Chapter
Established in 1972, the Oman–Spain relationship has long been built on mutual respect and shared interests. Over the years, the partnership has flourished across areas such as business, energy, and technology. Now, as His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik prepares for an official visit to Spain, both nations are turning their attention to tourism as a major avenue for collaboration in 2025.Oman is intensifying its efforts to attract Spanish visitors by showcasing its diverse landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and world-class hospitality. A significant milestone came with the opening of Oman’s dedicated tourism office in Spain — a clear sign of commitment to building stronger bridges between the two markets.
Spanish Visitors on the Rise
The results are already visible. According to Oman’s Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, the country recorded a 15 per cent increase in Spanish tourist arrivals in 2025, with 6,764 Spanish visitors in the third quarter alone. Officials attribute this growth to successful promotional campaigns, closer collaboration with travel agencies, and Oman’s strong presence at major international tourism fairs, including Fitur 2025 in Madrid. At Fitur, Oman’s national pavilion captured widespread attention, earning recognition for its innovative and sustainable design. The display highlighted the Sultanate’s blend of tradition and modernity, positioning Oman as a premier cultural and eco-tourism destination in the Gulf region.
Spanish Investment Flourishes in Oman
Beyond tourism, Spain’s economic footprint in Oman continues to expand. By September 2025, 58 Spanish companies had established operations in the Sultanate, contributing over RO 69 million in investments across key sectors such as construction, transport, and retail. Spain now ranks among Oman’s leading investors, with approximately RO 37 million channelled into energy, civil engineering, and tourism ventures. Oman’s strategic location offers Spanish businesses a valuable gateway to the wider Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) market. This deepening economic relationship complements the two countries’ cultural and tourism ambitions, creating a comprehensive partnership that extends well beyond leisure travel.
Cultural Bonds and Shared Heritage
For many Spaniards, Oman’s allure lies not only in its dramatic deserts and pristine coastlines but also in its historical connections with the Iberian Peninsula. The centuries-old Arab influence in Al-Andalus and the contributions of Omani scholars to Spanish intellectual life remain points of cultural resonance. Tourism authorities in Oman are tapping into this shared heritage by tailoring marketing campaigns to Spanish interests — from history-focused itineraries to adventure and eco-tourism experiences. The aim is to make Oman a familiar yet fascinating destination for Spanish travellers seeking authenticity and depth.
A Vision for the Future
The enhanced partnership aligns closely with Oman Vision 2040, which emphasises sustainable development and economic diversification through tourism and innovation. Spain, with its globally admired tourism model, serves as both a partner and an inspiration. Looking ahead, the two nations are exploring new avenues of cooperation — including medical tourism, renewable energy-based travel, and the integration of digital technology to improve visitor experiences. Spain’s expertise in healthcare, smart tourism, and green infrastructure provides a strong foundation for these joint ventures.
Shared Growth and Lasting Friendship
As both countries prepare for further high-level meetings and cultural exchanges, optimism runs high. Omani and Spanish tourism stakeholders are already developing projects aimed at enhancing connectivity, promoting heritage, and creating long-term opportunities for growth. In many ways, the Oman–Spain partnership is more than a bilateral agreement — it is a meeting of minds and cultures. By strengthening tourism ties, both nations stand to gain not only economically but also through greater cultural understanding and friendship.
