Myanmar sentenced Aung San Suu Kyi aide to 20 years in prison

On 29th October 2021, Win Htein, a senior aide to Myanmar’s leader Aung San Suu Kyi, was sentenced to 20 years in prison on charges of high treason. He was arrested in the aftermath of a 1st of February after coup took over Myanmar turning everything into chaos. The coup ended a decade of tentative democratic rule in the country. Win Htein who is 79 years of age, has been a regarded as the right hand and constant supporter of the leader Aung San Suu Kyi. A former solider, he also has been a political prisoner during decades campaigning to end army rule. The lawyer of the leader has further stated that the verdict will be further challenged by them and will be won.

After the verdict came out his daughter Chit Suu Win Htein sent a message to the public stating “So this is as we expected. It’s not a surprise but it’s a sad and outrageous thing to hear about the ridiculous sentencing. Perpetrators of this injustice will be held accountable for this … Please hold on people! We will win!”

On the other hand, Aung San Suu Kyi faces a raft of charges that could see her jailed for decades, including illegally importing walkie-talkies, flouting coronavirus rules, accepting bribes of cash and gold, incitement to cause public alarm and violating the Official Secrets Act.

Th country has been in turmoil since February this year as the military power took over and outcasted the National League for Democracy (NLD) government. The reason for the same was that the party was accused of fraud in 2020 poll in which they had won with majority of votes. The domestic situation there is in chaos with huge protests going on across the country. According to the various reports, more than 1,200 people have been killed while many have been detained. The international community has been trying to get through the authority to settle things but has been unsuccessful. At the ASEAN summit as well, the General wasn’t allowed to attend the summit until and unless things don’t go to normal. With the verdict for this case like this many reports indicate that the journey for the other leader will also be difficult in the future.
